Orphy Robinson & Aino Salto reflect on improvisation, influence, tradition, and authorship in jazz.

The Montreux Jazz Festival Residency in Montreux, Switzerland was founded to foster and support emerging artists from Switzerland and around the world. Over the course of the residency, participants engage in workshops, mentoring sessions and live performances. Renowned musician, educator, and mentor Orphy Robinson and emerging artist and songwriter Aino Salto, speaking during the 2025 Residency, offer insights on their experiences creating through the medium of jazz.

Jazz, as a genre, often elaborates and builds upon by other and . Rooted in the African-American experience, it has also embraced other musical and cultural influences over time. For jazz musicians, an understanding of , , assigning , and other issues related to musical works is therefore foundational. This knowledge can help musicians respect and honor both the origins—and the evolution—of jazz.
