Compilations

3 分钟 阅读

Sometimes works appear within a larger creative project.

These are best described as compilations.

Not all artworks stand alone. Think of an exhibition catalogue that gathers artworks and curatorial texts, a publication that combines photographs and essays, or a book that incorporates contributions from different collaborators.

are generally recognized as works created by selecting, coordinating, or arranging pre-existing materials in such a way that the overall result reflects the compiler’s creative choices. In many legal systems, this may be sufficient to meet the originality requirement for copyright protection.

Multiple Contributions

What makes a compilation special is that each contribution keeps its independence. Every artist, photographer, or writer still owns the copyright to their own piece, unless they signed the copyright away in a written agreement.

The Compiler’s Role

But there is a second layer of copyright related to compilations. The compilation itself belongs to the person or institution that puts the project together. This copyright covers not the individual artworks or essays, but the creative arrangement--namely, the selection, coordination and sequencing that shape the final result.

Imagine a curator designing a museum catalogue that combines artworks, essays, and design layouts into one publication. Each contributor retains copyright in their own work, while the museum holds rights to the catalogue’s structure and presentation. No one may reproduce the full catalogue without the museum’s permission, but each artist remains free to use his or her own images elsewhere.

Visual Arts Context

In the visual arts, similar principles apply to collaborative or curated formats such as artist portfolios, exhibition guides, digital slideshows, or online gallery presentations that incorporate distinct elements by different creators. Each element retains its own protection, while the creative structure that binds them together may itself be protected.
