Exhibition, Distribution and Communication

Exhibition, distribution, and communication of the work—that is, displaying it, selling or transferring it, and sharing it with remote audiences (for example, online or through broadcast)—are essential stages in the life of an artwork. From exhibiting works in galleries, museums, or curated online environments, to distributing them through sales, licensing, or platforms, and communicating them via catalogues, websites, and media, or showing them on television or documentaries, each route offers different opportunities and responsibilities.

Indonesian artist Heri Dono, speaking to the camera from his Studio Kalahan, speaks about the importance of getting your work out into the world, introducing the CLIP topic on Exhibition, Distribution, and Communication.

Hi, my name is Heri Dono.

I'm an artist from Indonesia.

When you've created an artwork, what comes next?

How do you bring it out of your studio and into the world?

Your works tell stories, perhaps about where you come from, your community, your culture, or the ideas you want to express.

Sharing these stories is part of being an artist.

There are many different ways to share your artwork.

You might go through galleries which can help present and sell your work, or collaborate with museums and cultural institutions which focus usually on exhibitions, research and public engagement.

There are also international exhibitions, art fairs, or biennales, that can help open doors to new audiences and professional networks.

And of course, you can share your work online too, through digital platforms, virtual galleries and social media.

These let you reach people anywhere in the world.

But to maximize your reach, you also have to consider your communication.

Connecting to your audience by talking about your work, sharing the ideas behind it, explaining your process.

This can become a powerful way of gaining visibility for your work and for yourself.
